🍦 Minnehaha Scoop opens Friday
Minnehaha Scoop (3352 Minnehaha Ave)

The neighborhood ice cream ecosystem will reach full maturity on Friday, when the Minnehaha Scoop opens for the season.

The walk-up scoop shop in a former auto service building on 34th and Minnehaha will be open Friday through Sunday in the spring and extend its hours during the summer.

Background

James Freid's been supplying his neighborhood with ice cream for a long time.

He began driving an ice cream truck in the neighborhood in 1990, out of what was then the Blue Bell Ice Cream warehouse on 32nd and Snelling. It was originally a temporary gig to save up money for a stint living in Papua New Guinea, but after returning to Minnesota he jumped back in and eventually worked his way into management. In 1997 he got a chance to buy the company's warehouse and fleet of trucks and renamed it Big Bell Ice Cream, which he still operates today with his wife, Karen.
